Objectives

Explore the fundamentals of nuclear HVAC design and commissioning including Radiation and non-radiation controlled area design principles, thermal and aeraulic calculations, equipment qualifications, main components design consideration and selection (fans, chillers, local air coolers), and case study.

Day 1

Section 1:

Safety and Landscape of nuclear power plant

  • Safety message, Landscape of nuclear power plant operation, and Ionizing radiation protection
    measures
  • Introduction to main safety assessment applicable to nuclear ventilation and stakeholders (UK
    and international)
  • Lesson learned from nuclear Accident and introduction to ongoing new build NPP and SMR

Section 2:

Nuclear ventilation fundamentals, design principle, and good practices from installation to
commissioning

  • Nuclear design, installation, commissioning, and operation sequences
  • Nuclear ventilation main functions in radiation-controlled and non-controlled areas: Containment
(Fire, radioactive substance), purification, cleaning, conditioning, comfort
  • Design requirement and ventilation architectures in radiation-controlled and non-controlled areas
  • Standard application: ISO-17873, ISO-1366, ISO-16170, etc.
  • Standard regulatory test and Equipment Qualification (EQ) principles and applicable codes
  • Thermal and aeraulic calculations’ basic principles
  • Ductwork Pressure loss calculation approach (ASHRAE), ductwork sizing, and fans selection
  • Cooling and Heating coils basic calculation principle
  • Optimizations during design phases
  • Installation basic rules and tolerances: cases to avoid and recommendations
  • Tests and commissioning sequence presentation and main criteria to fulfill till handover for operation
  • Basic operation and maintenance actions for safety important components: Fans, Fire & smoke dampers, chillers, Tight isolation dampers /valves, HEPA/iodine Filters, etc.
  • QUIZZES

Day 2

Case Study 1

Design of ventilation, cooling, and heating of a 3500 sqm building hosting:

  • Radiation-controlled rooms: Safety pumps and valves, tanks, glove boxes, etc.
  • Radiation non-controlled rooms: accumulators Battery room, I&C, and switchgear rooms
  • Design architecture (including static and dynamic containment, air & gas filtration,
    cleaning, conditioning)
  • Thermal and aeraulic calculation resulting in main equipment selection: fans, AHU, chillers,
local air coolers, etc. (via Excel Calculation tools/macro)
  • Proposal of floor layout implementation of main equipment
  • Excluded from this study: Seismic calculation, equipment qualification, and Smoke exhaust
    design

Case study 2

  • Proposal of commissioning plan for case 1 systems test and commissioning
Definition of sequence, acceptance criteria, operational and safety I&C functions
  • Proposal of test and commissioning execution instruction and results records sheets for fans, HEPA filters, Iodine Traps
